jam and promises

so yep this is a good enough reason to continue my pursuit of all things gorgeous and handmade.

I Took The Handmade Pledge! BuyHandmade.org

i took the pledge. see i'm number 2122. i have to keep buying. simple as that. guilt free spending here i come...

and talking about handmade. i recently joined my very first swap and an international one at that. it's a jam sawp organised by molly at beer-splattered. molly is a fabulous cook, you can tell by the amazing stories she posts day after day. i didn't think of that when i joined the jam swap did i? i didn't think that perhaps i should practice making jam a few times before i gave it away to someone in america. i didn't think i would get molly as my partner! this made me more than nervous i can tell you!

i felt so sorry for her having to try a jar of my very first batch of jam, made from berries that i had never cooked with before. so i decided to buy a jar of one of the best jams i have ever tasted and ship that too. perhaps she wouldn't look too close at my attempt.

it's not even berry season here, so i was really lucky to have been given a huge stack of mulberries from a friend. i think that because of the unseasonal weather, the fruit ripened at the wrong time of the year. lucky me!

even though it was my first time, it was a lot of messy fun - thanks to some extra effort of behalf on my mum and some excellent advice from my farm-dwelling jam expert auntie. so ta da - here it is, my very own mulberry jam!

mulberry jam

what i used:

1.75kg Mulberries
500g Raspberries
250g Strawberries
2.5kg Sugar
6 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
2 Apples (grated)
50g Jamsetta

what i did:

rub the bottom of a heavy pan with copha. this will help prevent the jam from sticking.

mix altogether and boil for a few hours until thick. meanwhile wash jars in hot soapy water and dry in a warm oven.

bottle the jam while still hot and tightly screw on the lid. invert jars for 20 minutes, and then turn up the right way and leave to cool.

wrap in brown paper and squish into a box. send over to the other side of the world and cross fingers.

Sounds yummy, although I have never tasted mulberries. Actually, I have never seen a mulberry here in TN.
